Wonderful veggie lunch. It's true that the best food can be found in strip malls. We had tea salad, egg curry and pumpkin curry. All delicious and well priced.
A lovely couple owns this authentic Burmese restaurant. The restaurant shares a small parking lot with several other businesses. There are also plenty of additional parking spots down the ramp from the restaurant. We were greeted and seated by the friendly owner upon entering the restaurant. They have an extensive menu offering Burmese, Chinese, and Indian cuisine. We ordered the catfish chowder, tea leaf salad, okra egg curry, house special noodles, and jasmine rice. Our food came out in a timely manner. The tea leaf salad had a savory, salty, mildly sour flavors to it. The peanuts added a nice crunch and the chili added a nice kick to it. The catfish chowder had a good amount of yellow split peas and noodles. It was so flavorful that we didn't need to add lime or fish sauce to it. The okra egg curry and the house noodles were very tasty. While we were eating, the kind owner came by and chatted with us. They have been in business for 10 years and the lease will up sometime in April next year. They are looking for a new place to relocate to. The prices are fairly reasonable. They're generous with the portions. They offered excellent service. We will definitely be back to try their garlic noodles and pumpkin curry before they relocate.
Happy Myanmar Cafe is now called Taste of Burma. They changed the name to something easier for the customers to remember and say, and it was shorter as well. It was what the customers preferred. It's a corner restaurant in a plaza, so there isn't a whole lot of traffic. They have been open for about 10 years. It's a very casual space. I had forgotten that I had been here before, but vaguely remembered the experience after reading my old review from over seven years ago. I ordered the Tea Leaf Salad $15.99 as I always do at Burmese restaurants. Their version does come out all mixed together already and I did notice it was missing a little something, as well as some heat. After speaking with who I think is the owner, I learned that they now omit the dried shrimp in this dish. This was a reflection of the many allergy concerns and vegetarian requests. They also do not include any chili peppers in the salad. However, I was able to add a little fish sauce from the condiments available to me. This added the missing umami element. I can see how this restaurant definitely caters to their clientele. The Little Gal ordered the Pumpkin Curry $14.99 and a side of Jasmine Rice $3. She did not want to share this dish and gave me a dirty look when I grabbed a piece of the kabocha squash. What makes this curry different is the lack of coconut milk. As a result, you get a richer taste but less sauce to work with. The Little Guy ordered the Catfish Chowder Soup $14.99. You won't find chunks of fish as it's all been blended together. He ate all of it and the bowl was licked clean. Service was much better this time around. It felt more personal. They were constantly refilling the tea pots and water without us asking. The kids requested we return on our next visit to the area. They had no issues splitting the check with our party of 8. Overall, this experience was a lot better than my initial one.
Amazing all around always hits the spot when I have a sauce carb craving. Fried rice or Ghi Dok much love! With the paratha to start off and the matcha ice cream was a nice little touch to hit my sweet tooth at the end lost count how many times I came to dine in and DoorDash. So happy to see this place thriving even through COVID :)
Taste of Burma is another good Burmese restaurant in Daly City. I came here on a Saturday for lunch and although a couple of tables were occupied, there was no wait for a table. We ended up ordering the samusas, tea leaf salad, coconut chicken soup, and nan gyi dok. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time and portions were okay to a bit small. The samusas were crispy and filled with potatoes, onions, and spices that tasted delicious. The order came with 5 pieces for $7.99. This was a great appetizer and was served with their house sauce. The tea leaf salad ($13.99) was good, however, it was not bursting with flavor as some of the other tea leaf salads I've had. The portion wasn't very big as well, but we still enjoyed the tea leaf salad. The coconut chicken soup ($12.99) was creamy and very enjoyable. Nan Gyi Dok ($12.99) is thick rice vermicelli with coconut diced chicken, red onions, cilantro, fried onions, and fried wonton skins. It was also very good, but reminded me of the coconut chicken soup, just without the creamy thick soup. Overall, the experience at Taste of Burma was really good. The staff was friendly, polite, and patient as we took awhile to eat and chat. The restaurant was clean, calm, and small. The bathroom was in good condition as well. The location is in south Daly City, a little closer to South San Francisco, in a small plaza on a hill. There is a small, but crowded parking lot. Taste of Burma is a good choice for Burmese food in this area.
AUTHENTIC Burmese food. Trust me, I know. Because I'm Burmese :)) This restaurant has no fancy decor or fancy utensils and tables but the food and service are impeccable. From appetizers to main courses, it is all AUTHENTIC. Nan gyi thoke, paratha, curry, grilled fish, samusa salad, burmese milk tea... take all of my money!! Service here is also super friendly and efficient-- they serve a scoop of free ice cream for dessert :)) I've been coming here and will keep coming back.
